Kaunas is Lithuania's second largest city with a history that dates back to medieval times. Kaunas Castle was built in the 1300s on the banks of the Nemunas River as a defensive fortress.  Between the two world wars, Kaunas was Lithuania's temporary state capital as Vilnius was occupied by the Polish. The history of the Baltic States is very convoluted!
